Multi-City Workshop on Sustainable Environmental Management Innovation Transfer & Knowledge Sharing (12-15 July 2016, Nongteng City, Buriram Province, Thailand

dsc_2380_small2Thailand’s National Focal Point of ASEAN ESC Model Cities (Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, Ministry of Natural Resource & Environment) organised a ‘Workshop on Sustainable Environmental Management Innovation Transfer and Knowledge Sharing from 12 – 15 July 2016 in in Buriram Province.

The workshop aimed to raise capacity of about 120 participants on sustainable environmental management from eight of Thailand’s Model Cities – Chiangrai, Panusnikhom, Pichit, Krabi, Kohkha, Renunakhon, Nongteng and Chiangkiean.

Attendees included mayors, municipal officials and their supporting stakeholders such as community leaders, school, civil society leaders, as well as officials from the provincial environment offices, who shared inspirational practices and ideas.

A main activity was the site visit at the 6 environmental learning sources of Nongteng municipality, namely; 1) the local wisdom learning center for self-sufficiency economy, sustainable environmental management innovation and renewable energy; 2) sustainable community forest management; 3) recyclable waste bank; 4) community’s earthworm farming for organic waste disposal; 5) solar energy for community’s water supply system; and 6) environmental friendly Thai silk weaving.

Every participating Model City presented their current project status and performance. Group discussions were held to brainstorm improved approaches for project performance review and the new desired outcomes for the next phase project improvement.
