As one of Thailand’s three Model Cities, Maehongson aims for sustainable development through public awareness and participation. One of their most successful projects is in the field of solid waste management, based on waste segregation, composting, and biological fermentation. Maehongson has had national recognition for its efforts through the ‘Liveable City Awards” in 2008 and the “Thailand Liveable and Sustainable City Awards” in 2009. The city participated in the ASEAN ESC Model Cities Programme undertaking a variety of activities including community level waste segregation, grease trap installation and urban greenery and cleanliness.

Maehongson aims to become a cultural city with environmental conservation and tourism. Its ultimate goal is to develop a better quality of life. Maehongson is also known for its outstanding public participation and promotion and engages all sections of the community in its efforts.
