Santiago is situated on the island of Luzon, 240km north of the capital city of Manila. The city has been the winner of numerous national awards not only for environmental sustainability but also good governance. Santiago attributes its success to its ability to network effectively across all city stakeholders and engage them in city work as equal partners. Due to its success in environmental sustainability, Santiago has been named as one of the Philippine Eco-Friendly and Healthy Cities. The city joined the ASEAN ESC Model Cities Programme undertaking capacity building activities for solid waste management and urban greenery, laying the groundwork for a planned eco-tourism project.
