Introduction to the city

Mayor Photo_MalangMalang is the second largest city in East Java, located close to the other Model Cities of Lamongan and Surabaya, with a history dating back to the Singhasari period 800 years ago.  It is known nationally for its success in environmental sustainability work, having won the prestigious Adipura Kencana Awards for 4 years in a row as well as awards for its achievements in air quality, waste banks and tree planting.  Malang joined the ASEAN ESC Model Cities Programme to organise the “Train the Trainers for Domestic Waste Leaderships based on Gender Sensitivity” Workshop for local community volunteers as well as a public awareness campaign on wastewater management and operating decentralised wastewater treatment systems.
