Introduction to the city

HE Kep Chuktema, Governor of Phnom Penh Capital CityThe capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh has a history of over 600 years and a rich cultural heritage.  In recent years Phnom Penh has experienced rapid economic growth and expansion, leading to it suffering from the effects of environmental degradation.  Nevertheless, despite limited means, Phnom Penh has made extensive efforts towards environmental sustainability which have been recognised through winning international awards including the Clean Water, Water for All Award (ADB, 2004), the World Leadership Award (London, 2007) and the ASEAN ESC Award (Bali, 2011).  Under the ASEAN ESC Model Cities Programme, Phnom Penh has been undertaking activities on raising public awareness on solid waste management with a focus on plastic bag reduction.
